Spain will win the World Cup- well at least if we are to believe that octopus seer named Paul. The oracle octopus named ‘Paul’ has gained popularity for the past weeks now for successfully naming the winner for past games.  The ‘seer sucker’ has predicted that Germany will advance to the semi-finals and a number of other games in the World Cup. Now this time around, given a choice betwee Spain and Netherlands, the Paul the Octopus has selected Spain to win it all the way.

So how does the animal picks the ‘winner’ of matches? Officials will put a mussel inside each of the two clear plastic boxes, and these boxes carry the national flags of the two teams. Now Paul will make his choice by opening the lid of these boxes by using its tentacles and eating one of the two treats. Of course, he does it inside a tank. For the finals of the World Cup, Paul the Octopus has devoured the mussel inside the tank with the Spanish flag!

Right after Rafa Nadal won his 2nd Wimbledon title, Nadal decided that he will support Spain in its quest to win the World Cup against Netherlands. Where Rafa goes, I go so that makes me a supporter as well of Spain come Monday against Netherlands. How will the Spanish team fare? Well, the same way I supported Rafa Nadal. Vamos Espanya!

Oh I forgot to write about the win of Rafa Nadal at Wimby. Not that I am not interested, but I am really busy. I am so glad that Nadal won this title, and this makes him one of the game’s greatest. If I am to be asked, Rafa Nadal will not surpass the numbers of Roger Federer in terms of slams won. But here’s what is important- Rafa Nadal is now the greatest claycourter of all time, and that you can say that Rafa is one of the greatest.

But perhaps here is the biggest thing for Rafa- he has Federer’s numbers. Rafa owns Federer, the greatest tennis player of all time. He has a winning record against the greatest. Now, for that title alone I would be happy for Rafa Nadal.

Just last Thursday while we are having our own strategic planning, I recieved a text message from HSBC informing me that my credit card was approved and said that I should wait for 10 days for delivery of the card. After 3 days, I got my card! Now that was fast, huh? So I immediately contacted the support and activated the card, and also contacted my cousin in order to try out the card the next day. It was fun having the card, and I chose to get a Fossil watch which is something I like to get for the longest time. It’s a good investment and relatively the price is a bit high (roughly $150), but at least I will pay for this in 6 months with 0 interest. My cousin got a Pioneer DVD player. Am I tempted to get another one? Not this time. I know how hard it is to earn so I must spend sensibly. Great Sunday, ruined only by someone from the past. I don’t know if I will commit, but now I know how my life would look like if she’s the one. Deeply worried, no? Anyway, my Fossil watch is there to save the day for me. No more drama; hello new self!

It’s a great day after all, one well save for that one melo-dramatic episode with one person who tried to paint a bad picture of me which are actually based on unfounded and unresearched accusations! But I digress. This is about tennis. This is about Rafa Nadal. Yay! Rafa Nadal thrashed Andy Murray of Scotland, thus ending London’s dream of having its own kid raise the Wimbledon trophy this year. Better luck next year; Rafa Nadal is simply too hot for grass, no?

I did not caught the match between Murray and Rafa Nadal since I was really tired last night due to that ‘argument’ (it’s you again!).  I only caught a good part of the match between Berdych and Djokovic, where Djokovic fell, stumbled and lost to an aggressive Berdych. I did not finish the match when Berdych won the second set for a 2-0 lead. I woke up sometime after 12 midnight, and amazingly I caught up the end of the match of Rafa Nadal and Murray as the scores were flashed! Nadal won in straight sets! Just imagine how tough Nadal is. Murray is a tough player to play, yet he went down in straight sets. So we have Rafa Nadal in the finals. Praying for  Rafa win. At least, make my day Rafa. Undone what that ‘person’ did to me last night!

It’s good to know that there will be no Williams v Williams in the finals of Wimbledon. Is the field too weak right now that we will look forward to the sisters to slug it out for the crown? Good thing Pironkova of Bulgaria crashed the party as she humbled Venus Williams. I watched the match between Kim Clijsters and Vera Zvoreneva, and I thought that Vera played average tennis. It was the unforced errors of the Belgian  that did her. I just hope that Vera goes all the way. You know, I have a thing for anything Russian or Spanish, see Rafa Nadal and Maria Sharapova. So here I am, beaming and gloating that no Williams finals will happen, and happy of the fact that Rafa Nadal is still in the mix- bruised and all.

Vera Zvonareva defeated Kim Clijsters. Vera held her nerves and played consistent and good tennis, and finally defeated Kim Clijsters. It was a good first set for Ms. Clijsters, but during the second part of the second set, the Belgian started hitting balls at the wrong side and the wrong direction, and the result is Vera winning her first match against Clijsters and booking her place at the semi-finals of Wimbledon. This is her second appearance at semi-finals and at Wimbledon at that! Here’s hoping that Vera goes all the way to challenge Serena Williams. But who is Vera Zvonareva? Vera Zvonareva is a Russian professional tennis player who turned professional in 2000. She is a former Top 5 player and since remained under the radar. But the good thing is that Vera continues to compete with the big guns even though she is often called as someone with fragile emotions, often breaking down to tears during matches. She is a doubles champion in US Open and got the bronze for Russia during the 2008 Olympics. This time in Wimbledon Championships, she is out to prove that she is ready to re-enter the Top 10 once again. She’s another favorite of mine.

Whew Rafa

27 Jun
2010

For the second time in this year’s edition of Wimbledon, Rafa Nadal of Spain was extended to five sets. The first one against Hasse and just last night against very confident German Petzschner. I was watching the game live on Star Sports but turned it off after the German was playing great and very confident and winning the 3rd set for a 2 set to 1 lead. I really thought that Nadal will be ousted the way the German is playing, but you surprised me again Rafa. Good to know that you are still in the mix. But things is going to be rough for Rafa as he show signs of injury as he called for the trainer at least four times during the match. Can he sustain his run in Wimbledon?

In women’s side, how lucky can Maria Sharapova get? For her fourth round match, she gets tough Serena Williams. In French Open, she got Justine Henin in the early round. Anyway, you can do it Maria and Rafa! Vamos!

I am a fan of Sony Ericsson for the longest time. The first Sony Ericsson phone that I got was the SE T630. The money used for the purchase of my first T630 was from by pay as a technical support representative way back then. Then last year, I bought another Sony Ericsson phone and it was the Sony Ericsson C902. I was satisfied with the phone, and I told myself that the next time I’ll buy another phone I want it to be Sony Ericsson once again. Right now, all I am hearing and reading is the Ericsson Xperia. Is Experia that good? Reviews have been patchy, and it seems that Xperia failed to really wow the crowd. Is th Experia forgettable? No matter what the reviews say, I think I already like the Xperia. But the problem is that I dont have the money right now to get one.

Who is Aravane Rezai?

20 Jun
2010

And who is Aravane Rezai? This year’s edition of Roland Garros offered me the opportunity to meet Aravane Rezai- in gold and glitter. I can still remember that match, no I was’nt there live. But I watched the match thanks to ESPN and Balls Channel. Here’s what Wiki is saying about Rezai the new it-girl in my list;

Ms. Aravane Rezai is of Iranian and French descent, and is now making waves in the tennis circuit by upsetting some of the top seeds including Sharapova, Henin and Williams. She is France’s number 2 player next to Marion Bartoli, but for sure it will not be log before Rezai becomes France’s top female player. And I would bet that she would become a Top 10 or even a Top5 player considering the way she plays the game. Remember that game with Petrova? She has the game to reach the top. Before she carried the French flag, she competed for Iran as well.

It’s time for Wimbledon. Will she figure prominently once again in the mix, just like what she did during her surprising run at the 2010 Roland Garros?

Here’s hoping that she can compete well, and same goes to my Maria Sharapova.

Waiting for Wimbledon

19 Jun
2010

It’s that time of the year in tennis where the grass is greener and spectators are more refined than usual. Welcome to Wimbledon, considered as the premier event in tennis. I am one of those waiting for this event to happen. I may not be there, but surely I will watch the some of the matches over at ESPN, if they cover the event. I will also be following the live scores over at Tennis.com and ESPN.com/tennis. I have read some of the so-called previews made by tennis columnists and they are pointing to a Federer as the winner in men’s field and a Serena-Venus finals. What? Still pining for a finals involving the Williams sisters? C’mon. The sisters are losing a few steps, and I don’t see a final Wimbledon involving the siblings. Putting my bet on Rafa Nadal (of course) and in the women’s side, I have a new favorite in Aravane Rezai.  She’s French, and much better than Marion Bartoli- the one hit wonder. Hope she makes a splash this year in grass. And yes, Maria Sharapova is still my it girl. Love Maria, and I can sense that the old Sharapova is starting to show up. What, Roddick as a threat in Wimby? Last year was a blip in the radar you know. Roddick is one- another one hit wonder.

Just pure joy. From that picture alone, you can say that Francesca Schiavone of Italy is ecstatic when she won the Roland Garros trophy for 2010. Nobody thought that Schiavone will be in the semi-finals and even in the finals. But strange things happen in French Open, and this year is no exemption. For this year, we have two suprise finalist in the women’s side. The other one is Australian Sam Stosur- the girl who eliminated Justine Henin and Serena Williams. Francesca Schiavone capitalized on the weak bottom half of the draw, and poor Elena Dementieva. This could have been her chance for a grand slam. The story line for Dementieva continues- the most promising active player never to won a grand slam.

So in the men’s side. Rafael Nadal.

What can I say. I am ecstatic. Rafa Nadal takes the sweetest revenge over Robin ‘Le Sod’ Soderling winning in straight sets. Now there are a number of reasons why this win by Rafa Nadal is special. First up, this is his first grand slam after a wild and disappointing 2009 season where he fell to Robin Soderling in the fourth round of the French Open. And with an injury, he failed to defend his Wimbledon crown, thus ceding the number 1 position to Roger Federer, which in turn allowed Federer to complete his collection. Also, his win was important in a sense that this surely boosted his confidence, knowing for a fact that he dispatched Soderling, the same tormentor of his in the past edition of Roland Garros! He won in straight sets, and for this year’s Roland Garros he never dropped a set! Celebrate, Rafa fans. The king of clay is definitely back, and ready to conquer clay. This is a late post, but better late than never, no?
